For Children...
Hosting a party for your child does not mean healthy eating has to go out the window. Set a great example for your child and their friends by trying these tips for making healthier children's birthday treats:
Use angel food cake, which has egg whites and less sugar, instead of a traditional yellow or chocolate layer cake.
Use whipped topping as frosting; flavor it with your favorite extract or fruit flavoring, or top with fruit.
Substitute light ice cream or low-fat frozen yogurt for ice cream. This can work even in an ice cream cake.
Serve popcorn, a whole grain, or whole grain pretzels and fruit as healthy snacks.
For a healthy soft drink, try mixing 100% fruit juice with seltzer water. You can use any 100% juice or 100% juice blend.
After the children work up a sweat, cool them off with homemade popsicles, made using 100% fruit juice.
Serve modest portions-let children ask for more if they want it.
For Adults...
You can surprise and delight your friends with yummy and healthful party snacks:
Make a fruit tray with vanilla nonfat yogurt as a dip.
Make a veggie tray with low fat ranch or reduced fat bleu cheese dressing for dipping.
Pair low fat hot dips such as spinach and artichoke or bean dip with whole grain crackers.
Pair reduced fat cheese with whole grain or flavored tortillas.
Serve mini slices of whole grain bread with nut butters such as almond or peanut butter.
Offer small bowls of nuts, such as peanuts, almonds, and walnuts.
For chips and salsa, use whole grain tortilla chips, such as corn tortilla chips. Salsa is fat free.
